Dewey Decimal Classification System
The Non-Fiction books in the JF Cooper Library, like many libraries, are organized according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
Melvil Dewey was born in 1851. As he got older, he loved reading and mathematics - but he was frustrated as he went into different libraries and saw that books were organized differently in each library. He knew that there had to be a better, more uniform way to categorize the books - he also knew that we find books by topics of interest, and that was where he began. He used his love of books and mathematics to come up with a system of organizing books using numbers which would classify books by topic, keep them together on the shelves, and help us Book Browse to find books quickly. Because the system was so good, he named it after himself!
